Consider any scientific breakthrough of the past: notice that the application of the new idea is much broader than was first realized. The people making the discovery were focused in one area, but later other people applied it to different areas.

The modern atomic theory of matter, for example, was designed to explain the behavior of gases under pressure, but it also neatly explains things from aerodynamics to freezing to chemical reactions.

The Loren method of well-log editing was originally designed to replace incorrect log intervals with values calculated from similar intervals above and below. Over time, it proved useful in replacing missing logs, identifying hydrocarbon zones, identifying subtle lithologic changes, continuously measuring pressure, tying synthetic seismograms, tying with checkshot surveys, and many other uses. It is a robust method, even when confronted with all the complexities of logging in the real world. When one method achieves such a wide variety of objectives, its validity is clear.
